Ingredients Needed to Make Perfect Milo Balls

Milo balls are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that combines Milo with crunchy biscuit crumbs, condensed milk, and coconut.

To make perfect Milo balls, you will need the following ingredients:

    1. Milo powder: Milo is a chocolate malt powder that is the star ingredient in these tasty treats. Make sure to use enough Milo to give your balls a rich and chocolatey flavor.
    2. Sweetened condensed milk: This sticky and sweet ingredient helps bind the biscuit crumbs together and gives the Milo balls their chewy texture.
    3. Plain biscuits: Plain biscuits such as Arnott's Marie, Arnott's Milk Arrowroot, or Digestives provide a crunchy texture to the Milo balls when crushed up into fine crumbs.
    4. Desiccated coconut: For coating the finished Milo balls, desiccated coconut adds a nice touch of sweetness and texture. I opt for the unsweetened variety, but sweetened will work just as well.
    5. Vanilla extract (optional): If you want to add an extra layer of flavor to your Milo balls, consider adding a splash of vanilla extract for some added depth.

To make perfect Milo balls, simply mix all of these ingredients together in a bowl until well combined, then shape them into bite-sized balls before rolling them in desiccated coconut for an extra pop of flavor.

Refrigerate the finished balls until firm, then enjoy!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Milo Balls at Home

These sweet little treats could not be easier to whip up.

I literally make up an entire batch for the canteen in the last 10 minutes before I leave for the day, they are that easy!

Scroll down for the full ingredient list and detailed instructions. But for a quick snapshot of how to make them, keep reading:

    1. Using a high speed food processor blitx the biscuits until they resemble fine crumbs.
    2. Add in the condensed milk, Milo powder and coconut, and blitz until everything comes together in one big bowl.
    3. Using a tablespoon to scoop out small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls.

Variations and Creative Twists on the Classic Milo Ball Recipe

This recipe is super versatile, so feel free to have some fun with it.

Some of my favourite variations are:

    • Add nuts: Simply mix in your favorite chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, or peanuts before rolling the mixture into balls. The nutty addition will not only give your Milo balls a satisfying texture but also provide a boost of protein and healthy fats. Obviously be mindful of this one if you are planning on sending these to a nut-free school.
    • Add some kick: For those who enjoy a little kick in their desserts, add some spices like cinnamon or chili powder to the mix. The warm flavors will complement the rich chocolate taste of the Milo perfectly and add a unique twist.
    • Nut butter: If you're looking for a healthier option, try using almond butter or cashew butter instead of condensed milk as the binding agent in your Milo balls. This swap will lower the sugar content while still providing that creamy texture that makes these snacks so irresistible. Again, be mindful if they are going to a nut free school. This option is also a lot more expensive, so you might want to reduce the size of your Milo balls to half a teaspoon to make them go further.
    • Sprinkles (affiliate link): We reserve this one for special occasions, but the kids love rolling the Milo balls in some colorful sprinkles (affiliate link) or dyed coconut flakes for something different. Not only will this make them look more festive and appetizing, but it will also add an extra layer of sweetness and texture to each bite. You can used themed sprinkles (affiliate link) to make it fit in for Christmas or Halloween.

There are so many other options: add some dried fruit, chocolate chips, or crushed pretzels; the only limitation if your imagination.

No matter how you choose to customize this recipe, one thing is for sure - these treats are sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike.

So get creative in the kitchen and experiment with different variations.

    Storing and Freezing Tips

To ensure that your Milo balls stay fresh for as long as possible, it's important to store them properly:

    1. Store in an airtight container: After making your Milo balls, transfer them to an airtight container to help keep them fresh. This will prevent any moisture from getting in and causing the balls to become soggy.
    2. Keep in the fridge: For optimal freshness, store your Milo balls in the refrigerator. This will help prolong their shelf life and maintain their texture.
    3. Freeze for longer storage: If you want to keep your Milo balls fresh for an extended period of time, consider freezing them. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container.
    4. Thaw before serving: When you're ready to enjoy your frozen Milo balls, make sure to thaw them at room temperature before serving. This will help bring out their flavors and textures while ensuring they taste just as delicious as when they were first made.

Whether you're looking for a quick snack, a sweet treat for a special occasion, or a fun and tasty dessert to enjoy with friends and family, Milo balls are sure to satisfy your cravings. With their rich chocolate flavor and crunchy texture, these little treats are the perfect combination of sweet and satisfying.

So why not give them a try and see for yourself just how delicious they can be?

How are you packing the lunchbox? I would pair this little treat with some fresh fruit, chopped veg, a little tub of tzatziki, and a Spicy Buffalo Chicken Wrap.
